Did Beethoven move frequently?

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, today Germany. In his teenager years, local wealthy and influential patrons helped him to meet and follow Haydn (on his way back from London) to Vienna, in order to learn from the great Master.

He first left Bonn for this reason in 1787 (at age 17), only to hasten back several weeks later, at the news of his dying mother. For the second and last time, he left Bonn in 1792.

He made tours in 1795 to Prague, Leipzig and Berlin, in 1800 to Pressburg and Budapest, but apart from these, he permanently stayed in and around Vienna for the rest of his life.

Beethoven was a restless and often agitated soul. This is evident in his sketchbooks or his original music score manuscripts. Finding peace, apart from being in the nature, was difficult for him. He could not stay long at one residence and he moved frequently.

During his 35 years in Vienna, Beethoven lived in more than 60 different places, often having more apartments at the same time. Most of these apartments in Vienna were located in what is now called the old city (inner city). Some of them were around Vienna, these he visited mostly during the summer periods, like Baden and Mödling. Often he was staying longer periods at wealthy patrons, as honored guest.

Today, some of these buildings are museums dedicated to Beethoven, some are private residences and many were destroyed in the name of city development.

Popular Beethoven covers more of these dwelling places in detail. You can see and read these articles by clicking on this tag link.
