The last complete work Beethoven wrote before his death on 26 March 1827, was the String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135. He completed this work in October 1826.
It has four movements and the play time is approx. 22-25 minutes. It was dedicated to Johann Wolfmayer and was premiered a year after Beethoven’s death, in March 1828, by the Schuppanzigh Quartet.
Although not a complete work, just a final movement for the String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130, but it was completed later than the Op. 135, around November 1826. Originally the Op. 130 was already finished in 1825, but the publisher Artaria pushed Beethoven to make a new final movement, as the original one was too long and complicated.
Beethoven not happily, but accepted the request and wrote a new last movement for the Op. 130. The original last movement was published separately by the name Grosse Fuge (Great Fugue or Grand Fugue) as Op. 133.
